On Monday we marked the beginning of Pride month in the Peace Garden in Leyland
Levi and Brad joined the Mayor, Mayoress and Kris Barber-Midgley from Typhoons RUFC (Lancashire’s inclusive rugby club), and gave speeches on the importance of Pride
Thank you to all staff and representatives for attending the flag raising ceremony
Here is a copy of the speech given by Levi, on behalf of Lancashire LGBT:
“Good morning, and thank you for the council, the Mayor, and Mayoress for inviting us here today.
I am honoured to be here, representing Lancashire LGBT and the incredible work we do to support our community in Lancashire.
The raising of the LGBTQ+ Pride flag is a powerful symbol. It represents visibility, acceptance, and the diverse spectrum of identities and experiences within our community. This flag, with its vibrant colours, tells the world that we are here, we are proud, and we will not be silenced. It is also a beacon of hope and solidarity for those who still struggle with acceptance, both from others and sometimes within themselves.
Pride and flag-raising events are more than just celebrations; they are acts of resistance and resilience. They remind us of our history and the battles we have fought. From the Stonewall Riots to the ongoing fight for trans rights today, our community has shown remarkable strength and unity. These events honour those who have paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy and also highlights the work that still needs to be done.
In the current political climate, our presence and visibility are more crucial than ever. We live in a time where progress is often met with backlash which can make us feel as though our hard-won rights are under threat. In recent months, we have seen debates around trans people’s rights. These issues are not just political; they are deeply personal, affecting the lives and wellbeing of many in our community.
Although charities like ours at Lancashire LGBT play an important role in providing safe spaces, resources, advocacy and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. We can’t do this alone !
So raising the flag today is a statement of defiance against those who seek to undermine our rights. It is a declaration that we will not go back to the shadows. We will continue to fight for a world where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live openly and authentically without fear of discrimination or violence.
Let us remember that Pride is not just about celebration; it is also about action. It is a call to continue our efforts in advocating for equality and justice. Let us use our voices, and our influence to push for change. Let us support one another and lift up those who are struggling. Let us educate and engage in conversations that challenge prejudices and promote understanding.
Together, we can create a future where every person is free to be who they are, without fear or shame
Lets stand proud, stay visible, and stand together.”
